[Music] Witnesses – III

Although seeing this listed as doom metal in the tags, it seems that the brilliant album by the New York-based group Witnesses is more cinematic in nature. The cover art, from a dark, foggy Gotham City-esque setting, gives you a great idea as to what kind of music you should be in for, and this did not disappoint.

[Music] Choirgiant – Midnight Tapes & Mourning Volumes

It’s albums like this that keep me attracted to what is happening in post-rock.  I’m no expert, and won’t ever claim to be, but there is something pleasant about not only the guitars on this album, but the bass work, which really stands out on the first track.  The vocals on the album do yeoman’s work complementing the instrumentation.

From Gregor himself:

Choirgiant is the project of Gregor Graham, a Scottish musician now based in Ontario, Canada. Following his time as a member of Edinburgh-based post-rock bands Penguins Kill Polar Bears and We, he was left with ideas to be explored. These ideas would soon become Choirgiant.

He’s earned a fan.

[Music] Refuge For Abandoned Souls by Rothko —Toneshift Magazine

If I recall correctly, it was my brother, Ralph, who hipped me to Rothko years ago.  Thanks to him, and to Ljubinko Zivkovic for the great article.  Toneshift is always worth sharing.

Rothko | Refuge For Abandoned SoulsTrace Recordings (LP/CD/DL) It seems that 20 years ago, back in London, Mark Beazley, Crawford Blair and John Meade took the name Rothko for their three bass guitar band to resemble the paintings of the visual artist of the same name. Blair and Meade have been gone for a while […]

[Music] Da Voile – Heitt Hjortu

Da Voile are a one-man post-rock band out of Minsk, Belarus.  They compare favorably to bands like Sigur Rós or Explosions In The Sky.  This EP has turned out to be a very impressive release.

If you are a fan of the genre, this release will not leave you feeling disappointed at all.  The guitar work is excellent, as it soars and dives effortlessly, and is supplemented with a fair amount of noise that doesn’t overwhelm the beauty of the tracks.

[Music] JOHN 3:16 – JOHN 3:16 / Visions Of The Hereafter

JOHN 3:16 are among the most powerful bands in dark ambient and drone music today.  Philippe Gerber continues to amaze with his catalog, but this release is particularly special, as I never had the chance to delve into their early catalog.

This release combines the first two albums by the band onto one cassette.  Both releases remind me not just of dark ambient music, but of the middle period post-Industrial and experimental music I grew up with.

Favorable is not a strong enough word to rank this release.  It’s quite powerful.

The THESIS PROJECT continues with another wonderful series, this one meant to accompany listeners while they travel. The length of the compositions ~ presented here by William Ryan Fritch, Drombeg, Hotel Neon and Marcus Fischer ~ invites immersion. Three pieces are over twenty minutes long, the fourth ten. As one can glean from the title, this is the second […]
