Some albums bear emotional scars of the artist and the listener equally well. I cannot recommend Tindersticks highly enough if you are having a drink of vodka and lime and either reminiscing about a lost love or wondering how the hell you managed to land into the situation you’re currently in. We need albums for wistful moments. This one should be filed next to your Chet Baker and Joy Division albums when a profound case of the blues hit you.
Think of a baritone-voiced Nick Cave with a more whiskey-drenched voice singing with a Stax Records house band. Dark, but full of soul. Recommended.
Cousin Silas is one of the leading lights of the underground bedroom ambient scene. Like so many of these characters (whose work I highly regard), he releases a lot of music, but somehow manages to maintain a sense of purpose of each and every release. These are crafted slabs of spacey, rich music for minds to float to.
Montreal-based band Gisèle were one of the first purchases I made on Bandcamp, so it’s quite nice to see their name pop up on my feed after a long, quiet absence. It’s a mish-mash of improvisational music, post-rock and progressive rock done tastefully. Two tracks only, but the listening is good and engaging.
There’s always a band that manages to slip into the cracks, no matter how carefully I try to research what’s new. Take Radare for instance – a band out of Wiesbaden, Germany, who specialize in a noir-jazz (maybe darkjazz?) style that reminds me of Die Haut, who gained fame collaborating with Nick Cave a lifetime ago, and the incredibly prolific Bohren & der Club of Gore.
Think of a psychedelic rock band influenced by Jess Franco films playing jazz with Twin Peaks reruns being played near the bar. This is the vibe I get as I groove to the album.
