For those of you pining for the days of raw bedroom recordings of guitar improvisation that remind you of seminal acts like The Durutti Column, a name mentioned frequently on these pages, this latest album by Martin Neuhold does the job nicely. The only quibble is the slightly rushed feeling in-between tracks, which makes this mini-album feel a bit rushed. The musicianship, thankfully, doesn’t suffer a bit.
There is no information I can find out about the project (or performer?) o /\/\ /\/\, except to say that said person is from Slovakia. I was looking for something heavy and noisy to wake me up after going through the hideous process of moving apartments in Beijing. Well, this did the trick.
Though labeled as ‘blacknoise‘, this tends to be more wall-of-sound guitar improvisation than the cheesy metal I’ve seen other bands pull off under this genre.
This is an impressive album as noise records go.

Ciro Berenguer is a guitarist and composer from Argentina who has lived for many years in Barcelona, Spain. He likes both traditional and nontraditional ways of playing the guitar: processing the sound through many electronic devices or playing just the guitar alone. Two facets of his playing expressed in a handful of albums and collaborations, from standard guitar music to a more experimental and improvised way of making sounds, enjoying both approaches.
It’s been some time since we heard from our friend and Silent Island guitarist István Csarnogurszky, so when he told us he had a new EP out, we jumped at the chance to give it a listen.
It’s a shimmering as ever. Relaxed, confident progressive rock instrumentals infused with a more modern post-rock feel. There are elements of jazz fusion, albeit of a more smooth variety.

Lárus Sigurðsson is a new name for me. The pianist and multi-instrumentalist hails from Iceland, and he already has a catalog which is a few records deep. This is a mellow, but absorbing album to listen to, with piano, guitar, and voice out in the distance.
H. J. Ayala has been featured here before, providing some mightily atmospheric guitar playing. His current release has to be his darkest yet, however. The entrance to the album (appropriately titled “Entrada“) feels like the beginning of a horror movie with a proper budget. The tension is palpable.
It gets deeper in feel from then on. The whole of this album was made on guitars only, with effects being added after the recording. In fact, all the sounds come from the guitar in it self and the place where the microphone was settled.
Eerie listening, but very rewarding.
Johanna Warren is a folk singer from Portland, Oregon, who caught my ear. There’s a very sweet tone to her voice that I’m not used to hearing from other American folkies. This is my first encounter with her work, and I’d say I’m looking forward to hearing more from her.
