Oriol Roca is a percussionist based out of Barcelona, Spain who has collaborated with improvisers like Jan Bang and Paolo Angeli. It seems the local Barcelona jazz and improv scene is becoming one of the best in the world.
[Music] Frail Digit Lamb’s Tongue – Just Rulings in the Court of Astaroth?
I normally don’t cover much noise because the scene is filled with garbage. Most of it consists of nihilists more interested in shocking their readers with crap record covers than constructing sonic art. Most sound like a teenage kid flipping on the switch to their mother’s vacuum, recording it, and tacking on a diatribe and an asking price for $5. Pass.
This album was a pleasant exception. We have 67 tracks of short, sharp, no-nonsense noise, courtesy of Geronimo Arafat’s noise project, Frail Digit Lamb’s Tongue.
[Music] Steely Dan – Rikki Don’t Lose That Number
Steely Dan bassist and songwriter Walter Becker passed away today. Variety Magazine provides a eulogy for him here. Inside the article is a statement given by his friend and fellow band member, Donald Fagen.
In his honor, I post the song that first attracted me to the band.
[Music] Halim El-Dabh – Wire Recorder Piece (1944)
Egyptian-American composer Halim El-Dabh may well have been the first person to compose a piece in the style of Musique Concrète. There are arguments as to whether he or Pierre Schaeffer were first, and no one can say for sure.
Sadly, he departed this mortal coil yesterday. Many thanks to my friend, George Miskedakis, for advising me about his passing.
[Music] Salah Ragab and The Cairo Jazz Band – Egyptian Jazz
What a magnificent find! Salah Ragab is the father of Egyptian Jazz. He produces a sound that blends the best elements of the venerable genre, as well as bits of Latin, soundtrack, and even cha-cha-cha in his concoction.
[Music] Companyia Elèctrica Dharma – Diumenge
Companyia Elèctrica Dharma are a band out of Barcelona, Spain. They manage to mix jazz (ethnic and free), fusion, progressive rock, and even touches of folk into their compositions.
[Music] Eero Koivistoinen & UMO – Arctic Blues
Today’s treasure comes from a release from 2016. Finland’s Eero Koivistoinen pairs with his UMO Jazz Orchestra for a mellow, occasionally hot, new work. Not quite as wild as his 70s material, but still quite impressive.
[Music] Beyond Beyond is Beyond 2017 Summer Jam Sampler
Beyond Beyond is Beyond has begun to carve a place for themselves as the premier prog-psych record label in the United States. Their catalog features acts like Japan’s Kikagaku Moyo, Brooklyn’s Ancient Ocean and many others. This compilation is a great way to introduce yourselves to their racket.
[Music Podcast] Adam Kvasnica – Jazz To Dance
Another fine podcast by Slovakian vinyl hound Adam Kvasnica! The only problem here is that we’d really love a track listing. Otherwise, this is, hands down, the best podcast on Mixcloud!
[Music] Ivanov Down – Outch Putch
Ivanov Down is (or were, it’s hard to say for sure) a post-punk band out of Ukraine. Any information on them would be most welcome.
