Bi Kyo Ran were rather unfairly tagged as a Japanese King Crimson clone. By this album, that image was finally shed.
They are apparently still active doing soundtracks for TV shows in Japan, but I can’t imagine any of the new material having the power of this disc.
How on Earth did I manage to miss Sarolta Zalatnay? She’s the Hungarian Janis Joplin, only funkier to my ears. She had the sound and the look to be an international star, but never quite pulled it off, unfortunately.
You have to be something else to make a song called Andrei Rublev, especially one with a Krautrock influence. Nice one, lads!
Liverpool psych-pop five-piece The Vryll Society have released a new single, “Andrei Rublev.”
The band are currently working on their debut album, and have released a series of singles and an EP titled Pangea through famed Liverpool indie label Deltasonic Records (The Coral, The Zutons, White Room). The band recently supported The Kooks, Blossoms and The Coral in the U.K., and they also made an appearance at last year’s SXSW festival in Austin.
Their stunningly beautiful new song, “Andrei Rublev” is as mellowing as it is hypnotic, with frontman Mike Ellis’ calming lead vocals, their kraut-rock rhythm section, lush synth soundscapes and intricate psych guitar lines. The song’s raw power sneaks up on listeners with its trotting bass line and shimmering Procol Harum-esque keyboards before it erupts with euphoric sonic textures and biting guitar solos.

Amazing things keep showing up in Mexico. Sonido Gallo Negro are a band out of Mexico City, and mix a wild cumbia sound with psychedelic music. The results are thoroghly in keeping with the best of radical Mexican alternative music.
Guerssen Records out of Barcelona reissue a very mellow, rather nicely acid-washed slab of Argentinian psych courtesy of a band called Cuasares (Quazars).
Outside of the link provided, I have no info on the band, and it’s a shame there isn’t much more to tell you about these guys other than this is nice, funky, and damn near danceable.
In 2008, Legendary Pink Dots members Edward Ka-Spel and The Silverman trekked over to Chile where they made a collaboration of Michel Leroy of Un Festín Sagital, Chile’s finest experimental neofolk group.
This hazy, drony, Krauty improvisation is the fruit of their meeting. Stunningly hypnotic work.
All About Jazz does a splendid job interviewing Leonardo Pavkovic, whose imprint MoonJune Records has released some of the most vital discs of the past five years in the field of jazz and avant-progressive rock.
Scattered Purgatory are a heavy psychedelic band out of Taipei, Taiwan, whose influences seem to include Krautrock bands like Can and Amon Düül II, as well as Japanese psychedelic-folk bands like Ghost.
The label’s roster has always featured a wide breadth of sonic explorers, from ambient artists through very heavy metal and post-metal acts to jazz fusion.

It’s amazing to think that this label has been around for 20 years, and I missed a good fifteen of those due to ignorance. May they have another happy 20.

Nostress Netlabel isn’t a one-trick-pony label. The genres covered include Psychedelic, Post Rock, Avant-garde, Electronic and Electroacoustic music. The breadth of what they are covering is incredible, and the label is offering this compilation as a FLAC file release for free.
This is a great way to acquaint yourself with one of the best netlabels operating today.
