[Music] Album Premiere: Girls on Film 1979 Demo EP by Duran Duran feat. Andy Wickett

My brother and I, and millions of boys and (especially) girls grew up with Duran Duran. That Cleopatra Records, undoubtedly the kings of the reissue scene, would release these demos done with former singer Andy Wickett comes as a pleasant surprise.

The Big Takeover Magazine has plenty of background information on this intriguing release, and do take the time to hear Girls On Film in a very raw, far less-polished but perfectly acceptable form.

[Music] Awesome Tapes From Africa: Aïcha Tachinwite

aicha

Awesome Tapes From Africa has been releasing some utterly amazing music from all over the Continent, but it got its start as a blog sharing tapes that would otherwise never have exposure in the West.

This particular tape features Moroccan Berber singer Aïcha Tachinwite (also transliterated as Tachinouite), a fine recording of disco-influenced Arabic music.  The only issue with this tape will be trying to find a track listing.  Otherwise, this is a gem.

[Music] HJ Ayala – Wires

HJ (Hector Javier) Ayala is a free-jazz/experimental guitarist originally from Mexico who is now residing in Strasbourg, France. His new release is experimental in the most relaxed and mellow sense of the word. A truly enjoyable release, especially since not only does HJ have his own style, but he references artists such as John Scofield, John Abercrombie (may his name be eternal) and even John Fahey (also, memory eternal). Gorgeous but challenging material here.

Ray Thomas, flautist, vocalist, and co-founder of The Moody Blues, passed away on Thursday evening. The 76-year-old had been battling prostate cancer since 2013, though no cause has been given for his sudden death. Alongside Mike Pinder, Graeme Edge, Clint Warwick, and Denny Laine, Thomas helped found The Moody Blues in 1964. Two years later, Justin Hayward…

One of the wildest albums of the new year comes from Montreal composer Jean Derome. Even a quick look at the back of the CD, and one knows one is in for a treat: 20 performers on instruments ranging from tuned kalimbas to trombones. The tuning is to 60 Hz, the standard tuning of North American […]

[Film] Remembering The Man Who Fell to Earth, Two Years After David Bowie Returned to the Stars — Consequence of Sound

The Sunday Matinee takes a look at a classic or beloved film each weekend. This week, Clint Worthington revisits David Bowie’s debut role two years after his tragic passing. It’s been two years since David Bowie left us for his home planet, and we haven’t been the same since. Like Thomas Jerome Newton, the protagonist he portrays…
