Shed a tear for the hardcore prog collector — actually, don’t. This week has been absolutely crammed with articulate announcements looking to part fans from their hard-earned cash or pull them deeper into debt. And no, I’m not talking about the upcoming Derek Smalls solo album. Check out what’s coming our way as winter (hopefully) […]

Thanks to Rick for posting this. What a good year this is going to be for prog-heads!

Nick Soulsby of The Vinyl Factory penned a nice retrospective on the best records the incredibly noisy (in a good way) Throbbing Gristle ever produced.
Rodion Roșca (in Romanian) was one of the most bizarre and enigmatic musicians to come out of Romania. He was known mainly by those into freaky experimental music or progressive rock. For a quick glimpse of Rodion’s work, check out this link.
For many years, I gave up bothering listening to what was laughably termed “alternative” music. That was because it was pretty much the same boring swill that major labels were serving up, and I have far better things to waste my time and money on.
Thankfully, Slovakian record label Z Tapes has given me a reason to come back to hearing indie rock. They are constantly releasing music that is interesting, thoughtful, and on occasion, cheery.
This compilation is a freebie, so jump on it ASAP. It’s a nice intro to a fascinating record label.
Here are this year’s (disappointing, as usual) Bandcamp toppers of 2017. No Santiago Fradejas. No A.M. Ferrari-Fradejas. Nor Jeff Gburek. Nor Marco Lucchi. Nor Noël Akchoté. Nor so many other deserving artists who don’t offer up a plate of decent, non-offensive pseudo-soul, hip-hop or tacky dance music. Ah, well.

Arturo Stàlteri is a pianist who originally gained fame with the Italian progressive chamber rock group Pierrot Lunaire as a 15-year-old. He is still making magnificent music today, but this particular album is an album which was recorded in 1980 but shelved until today.

As far as I know, Rufus Harley is the ONLY jazz bagpiper, but I’d love to be proven wrong, as I have a fondness for both bagpipes and America’s finest genre of music.
Ashwanta Jackson of Atlas Obscura gives a nice portrait of Rufus Harley and his rather unique influence on jazz.

Pervuian psych-rockers Laghonia.
Noah Berlatsky of Bandcamp Daily gives a decent retrospective on some of the great progressive and psychedelic bands which came out of South America during the 1970s, though, sadly, the Mellow Records contributions seem to be permanently deleted, which is a shame.
This Is Darkness is a website based out of Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States which is dedicated to promoting dark ambient music. This is their first in what we hope to be are a long series of compilations dedicated to the promotion of the best of bleak music. Such names as Xerxes The Dark, Cisfinitum, Kammerheit and Leila Abdul-Rauf should be familiar to those of you who dig throughout the Internet finding the finest in headphone music, but there are loads more talented artists waiting for you to explore.
