Danish pop singer and pianist Agnes Obel is a new name to me. Perhaps it’s time to start listening to KCRW or indie radio again.

[Video] Tangerine Dream – Phaedra (Complete Album) / Edgar Froese R.I.P.
Jerome Froese, son of Edgar and a fine musician in his own right, bring terrible news that his father, the linchpin of Tangerine Dream, has passed away. We post my favorite album by the band, Phaedra, in his memory.
[Sample] Raymond M – Unidentified Threads EP
Something rhythmic, reminding me of old post-Industrial cassette culture, touched with This Heat, courtesy of Raymond M.
[Video] Chou Wen-Chung ( 周 文 中) – Yü Ko (1965)
It’s always wonderful to discover a composer or artist you missed out on. Chou Wen-Chung is a Chinese American composer who studied under Edgard Varèse and Otto Leuning, and his work is truly affected by Chinese culture, rather than a weak blending of Chinese and Western music.
Many thanks to Naoyoshi Kitamura, who originally posted this, and TheWelleszCompany, who hosts this video.
[Sample] Sōzu – Terra Australis Reliquendum [Terra Australis]
Sōzu is a project from Italy run by Paolo Mascolini. He’s become a favorite on my Soundcloud feed. This particular piece, about 15 minutes in length, goes into cosmic territory, mixing a Floyd-ish dreamscape with early ambient and Krautrock/Kosmische Musik flourishes.
[Video] Miles Davis & John Coltrane – So What – Live Jazz (1959)
Most of the time, you will find some tasteful rarities here. Today, a couple of giants are gracing these pages: Miles Davis and John Coltrane, playing live and tearing things up. Miles was already beginning to peak (and didn’t stop until near his death), and John was just beginning to make a name for himself. Enjoy!
Elvis Presley’s 80th Birthday Celebrated With Reissues, New Website

If you are a fan of “The King” (and I am, certainly), tomorrow will be a great day. Elvis would have turned 80 years old today. The thought boggles the mind. Could you imagine him doing Vegas in this day and age?
Rolling Stone Magazine reports on the reissue campaign here, and also announces the launching of a new website dedicated to promoting the re-releases.
[Video] Dream Syndicate – Loving the Sinner, Hating the Sin
It seems that The Dream Syndicate, who are local boys in my current neck of the woods, are getting back together again for a series of performances. It’s hard to believe this is about two-and-a-half decades old now. Good for Steve Wynn and company reuniting!
[Video] Foltin and Nikola Kodjabashia – To Whom Do You Belong Now?
Foltin are one of the most innovative groups in the Republic of Macedonia. I’ve always wondered why those into Rock-In-Opposition music didn’t gravitate to their quirky music much sooner. Nikola Kodjabashia is a Macedonian pianist currently based in the United Kingdom who works primarily composing avant-garde music. How this pairing could produce such sumptuous, smoky trip-hop not out-of-place in any New York jazz bar is beyond me. Well worth seeking out!
Mexican Mods Helped Reshape the Cartel-Ravaged City of Tijuana

Music and subculture as escapism. My friends Ted and Orlando posted this same link a few days ago, and I wanted to share it, but not before digesting it a bit.
I actually went to Tijuana about six months ago for dental work (which was stellar, by the way). The place, though a bit grubby, was bustling with life. Hipsters were walking around, not unlike Los Angeles. You didn’t see the narco scum walking the streets as though they owned it, though surely the seedy element came out at night, long after I had finished what I needed to finish.
It’s good to see that places like Tijuana are doing what they can to actually enjoy life, rather than be at the mercy of criminals who are little different from the thugs one finds in almost any inner city (minus the decapitations and mutilations, which make Mexican gangsters sit on par with ISIS or Al Qaeda).
Vice Magazine does a fine job documenting the mod scene in TJ. For all their faults in other areas, like politics, Vice’s travelogues are simply top-notch.
