[Music] MAGAZINE – “The Albums” — The Fat Angel Sings

The Fat Angel Sings is one of the most interesting blogs on my feed. Today, the legendary Magazine are discussed.

Magazine an English post-punk band active from 1977 to 1981, then again from 2009 to 2011. The band was formed by Howard Devoto . Devoto had decided to create a more progressive and less “traditional” rock band. Devoto formed Magazine in Manchester, he met guitarist McGeoch, then an art student, and they began writing songs, some of which would appear on the […]

[Music] Bandcamp Weekly January 22, 2019

Bandcamp’s weekly shows are a great way to explore music you probably wouldn’t normally run into.  It’s certainly true in my case, as I know little about hip-hop, modern soul, or a handful of the other genres ably covered by DJ Andrew Jervis, though he’s in my wheelhouse when it comes to ‘World’ music and reissues.  At least in China, I know that I can reliably wake up every Wednesday morning (with few exceptions) and find a pile of new releases to check out.

Enjoy Episode 295 here.

[Music] Abquexa – Steep

2019 is off to a flying start!

Several of my favorite musicians and/or composers are quite actively broadening their catalogs, and our old friend, Abquexa (among his many aliases) has returned to the blog with a disc that could be described as ‘avant-pop’.  The tunes fit the normal song structure, but the weirdness in each track makes for very intriguing listening.

[Music] Āustras Laīwan – Māris Tensīlis

I have a deep interest in Old Prussian culture, as a thread of my own ancestry comes from the region now known as Kaliningard, though it was once East Prussia.  I’m impressed to see that some bands are trying hard to preserve the culture.

All credit for the music of Āustras Laīwan goes to Aleks Āulaukis, ably assisted by Anna Dushkina on viola and vocals, and by Aleksey Stepuchev, who plays trumpet.

[Music] H. J. Ayala – Atmospheres

H. J. Ayala has been featured here before, providing some mightily atmospheric guitar playing. His current release has to be his darkest yet, however. The entrance to the album (appropriately titled “Entrada“) feels like the beginning of a horror movie with a proper budget. The tension is palpable.

It gets deeper in feel from then on.  The whole of this album was made on guitars only, with effects being added after the recording.  In fact, all the sounds come from the guitar in it self and the place where the microphone was settled.

Eerie listening, but very rewarding.

[Music] Laibach – The Sound of Music — a closer listen

Much respect to captainfreakout at A Closer Listen to this great review of Laibach’s new album.

By now, you probably know this album’s story: avant-garde collective Laibach go to North Korea in 2015 and become the first Western band to play there ever since the country split in two. What they play is a variation on their regular praxis: The Sound of Music, the soundtrack of a movie which is apparently […]
