Canary Records has never failed in any project they have released. I consider it almost a sacred duty to buy as many of their releases as possible, and this compilation of Fado is no exception. The remastering is well done, making each song crisp, but having a well-worn, broken-in feeling.
Daymé Arocena is the most important artist to come out of Cuba since Celia Cruz, and this is not hyperbole. She will be seen among the legends of Cuban music if she continues on her trajectory.
I’m looking forward to her latest album, Sonocardiogram, to come out in September of this year. In the meantime, she saw fit to release this EP containing three tracks from that album which give a taste of the World Music stew she’s become famous for. Rhumba, Latin Jazz and other styles flow together effortlessly, reminding one of the more fusion-y elements of Miles Davis while he was working with Hermeto Pascoal. ¡Sabor!, indeed!
We live in an age where a small label from Belarus can pull in musicians from Brooklyn to Siberia. Ezhevika Records has a massive and talented catalog to pull from, and their latest comp showcases some amazing trip-hop musicians.
U Know Me Records has produced a magnificent compilation concentrating on drum sounds. The artists range in genre from post-punk to soul and modern hip-hop, but done in a style that makes them barely recognizable to each category. A refreshing introduction to that which is good in Poland.

I’m not normally a fan of bands who feel the need to use bodily functions to name a band, but Pipi Caca deliver a steaming pile of good music, mixing alternative music, chanson, R&B, trap and a touch of funk here and there. Another great release by La Souterraine Records.
Al Margolis, not under his nom de guerre of If, Bwana, gives us one 13-minute track of squeaks and noises. Pretty mellow for an experimental work!
