Photo Courtesy John Munson/ Star Ledger Truth be told, it was engineer Rudy Van Gelder who got me hooked on jazz. I had no idea of that when I started listening. I just heard the music and was drawn to it. I had failed miserably in 6th grade playing saxophone because of my teacher Mr. […]

[Music] Gasoline – A Journey Into Abstract Hip-Hop [Full album]
I have to admit that, as someone who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, and who enjoyed hip-hop when it came out, today’s batch is not my cup of tea, to put it as politely as possible.
This record, by the French group Gasoline, is a massive exception. They have something which reminds me of the good old days.
[Music] Horace Parlan – And That I Am So In Love (Ousley)
I confess ignorance to the work of Horace Parlan. He’s a hard-bop pianist who swings wonderfully.
[Music] Keith Jarrett Trio – You Took Advantage Of Me
There isn’t a setting where Keith Jarrett is bad in. He is particularly powerful, however, when paired with Jack DeJohnette and Gary Peacock on drums and double bass.
[Music] Miguel Alzerreka Cuarteto – Lord Suave
Miguel Alzerreka is a vibraphonist from Mexico. I came across him thanks to a newsletter from Museo Tamayo, one of Mexico’s best centers for art, music and culture.
Miguel also has a Soundcloud page worth exploring.
[Music] Mikołaj Trzaska – Kantry
Saxophonist and clarinetist Mikołaj Trzaska (link is in Polish, unfortunately) produces a very heavy, poetic album of noir-influenced jazz here.
[Music] Milcho Leviev – Dave Holland – Cavatina
Bulgarian pianist Milcho Leviev came to my attention about 20 years ago via the Los Angeles record label MA Recordings, a high-end label. I was floored by the quality of his playing, and wondered why he didn’t receive more attention in the US than he has. Bassist Dave Holland needs little introduction, as he has a flood of crucial records on labels like ECM Records.
[Music] Boomerang – Mirage (Kazakhstan/USSR, 1986)
Another Soviet ethno-jazz project of high quality. Boomerang hailed from Kazakhstan, and this particular album is considered their rarest.
[Music] Miles Davis Quintet 1954 – But Not For Me (Take 2)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42KGso-eevI
Prime-era early Miles Davis, from 1954. If you notice that the sound of this session is amazing, you can thank the flawless ears of engineer Rudy Van Gelder, who recorded this session.
[Music] Duško Gojković & Sarajevo Big Band – Mujo Kuje (Doboy)
Duško Gojković made his name in the former Yugoslavia. He collaborates here with the Sarajevo Big Band out of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
