Tigran Hamasyan is a new name on my radar. He’s from Armenia, plays a very aggressive sort of jazz, and will be worth watching develop as the years pass. Nonesuch Records have picked another winner.

Adam Kvasnica comes up with yet another amazing podcast, covering some of the finest in Polish jazz. He’s on program 5 now, but if you want to hear his past volumes, check out this link.

As time is freeing up, I am considering posting press releases on worthy projects. If there are any interesting bands or labels who wish to put up press releases for me to post, do let me know. Please send a sample of the music and a press-release I can easily format into the blog.

Sad news to report. Perhaps the best known modern gypsy guitarist, Paco De Lucía, has passed away due to a heart attack. He was 66.
La Informacion reported the news today, as did ABC.es in Spain. English-language obituaries are sure to come in shortly.

I grew up as a fan of bebop as a wonderful expression of jazz, and had a healthy respect of the musical abilities of Yusuf Lateef, who recently expired at the age of 93.
The connection between bebop and some forms of Islam seems paradoxical to me, however. Political analyst Daniel Pipes writes on the curious tie between these two camps at his blog.
For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been doing what I can to correct some errors, and it looks like the site is finally taking better shape. A wiki has been added where I will add links and other data to musicians, artists and others who interest me.
If you have interest in being listed there, or know anyone who does, just let me know via the contact page.

El Club de Jazz is the finest podcast I’ve run across in terms of new jazz and improvisational music. The show is broadcast in Spanish, but you need not understand the language fluently to indulge in all the fine music they offer. ECdJ also offers other podcasts, so consider subscribing to them via RSS feel.

To start the blog, one could do far worse than post a picture of one of my musical heroes, the legendary ‘Satchmo’, Louis Armstrong, giving an impromptu performance in Cairo, Egypt, for a throng of fans in 1961. The photo is from the Louis Armstrong House Museum, and I wish to acknowledge Meridian.org, who originally posted this picture and others.
