[Music] fuvk – you like blue and i like you

Z Tapes continues to put out wonderfully emotive indie music, whether it’s of the bedroom pop variety or something straight-up weird.  They rarely, if ever, seem to fail with their releases.  All credit should go to Filip Zemcik for his near-perfect curation abilities.

fuvk are a emo/indie-pop band out of Austin, Texas who please greatly with music that is pleasing to the ear, but not fluffy or boring.  The tape recordings were a bit unsettling to hear, and they add a bit of spark to an already good EP’s worth of tuneage.

[Music] Selen Gülün – Many Faces

I’ve had the pleasure of following Selen Gülün’s work for about five years now, and her albums keep getting more and more interesting.  Many Faces sounds like a work straddling the line between music, theater and painting.  The sounds are delicate, graceful, but never sappy.  The vocals are crisp and sharp, with no feeling of wasted motion.  It’s a beautiful album.

I only have one gripe – I would love to see all of her back catalog become available digitally, at least, through Bandcamp and, if possible, to see these all come out on vinyl.  It’s a selfish wish, of course, because I find her music is suited best to the audiophile world, but one can dream.

[Music] Daymé Arocena – Trilogía

Daymé Arocena is the most important artist to come out of Cuba since Celia Cruz, and this is not hyperbole.  She will be seen among the legends of Cuban music if she continues on her trajectory.

I’m looking forward to her latest album, Sonocardiogram, to come out in September of this year. In the meantime, she saw fit to release this EP containing three tracks from that album which give a taste of the World Music stew she’s become famous for. Rhumba, Latin Jazz and other styles flow together effortlessly, reminding one of the more fusion-y elements of Miles Davis while he was working with Hermeto Pascoal. ¡Sabor!, indeed!
