Iran has a musical tradition that I find even richer than the local Arab Gulf states have, and they aren’t exactly hurting in the music department.
There is precious little known to Anglophone readers of the Mah Banoo Esemble except that the composer of this particular piece is one Majid Derakshani, who is a legendary composer and oud player.

Watership Down was my favorite movie as a child, even with all the violence and political intrigue in the movie a 10-year-old would not be able to process maturely.
It’s nice to see The Criterion Collection publish a piece of my childhood.

This band comes as a revelation to me. Apparently, Pärson Sound compare favorably to The Velvet Underground, and have connections with legendary Swedish Progressive Folk band Träd, Gräs och Stenar.
I hope to come across more of their weird psych sounds.

Lesley Gore, ‘It’s My Party’ and ‘You Don’t Own Me’ singer, dies at 68
The Los Angeles Times reports that Lesley Gore, the two-hit wonder, passed away today from cancer. She was 68. In her honor, here is the song that made her famous:

Sergey Kuryokhin was, by far, the most influential and most widely recognized avant-garde musician to come out of Russia in the 1980s. Both alone and with the Ensemble Pop-Mekhanika, he made music which was extreme even to American tastes. Here is an absurdist sample of his work.
[Video] Czesław Niemen – Bema Pamięci Rapsod Żałobny
Czesław Niemen was quite an interesting character. He wrote a song Marlene Dietrich would cover, as well as one of the greatest protest songs in the history of Polish rock (“Dziwny jest ten świat” [Strange Is This World]).
This particular piece almost counts as something resting between liturgical music and something akin to Queen, with an almost gospel-like vocal feel to it.
