We lost another legend today.
Percussionist Stefan Weisser, known to his fans and colleagues as Z’ev, passed on today at the age of 66. He left a body of work so important in experimental music that I expect tributes to pour out for days (including this one from our pals in Lithuania, Radikaliai!).
This free download is a release Z’ev did in Iceland in 2004. It gives a nice taste of what he could do with percussion.
Legendary Can bassist and recording engineer Holger Czukay passed away today. He was 79 years old.
Pitchfork Magazine reports about his passing here.
Many thanks to my friend, Michael Schneider, for posting this video, which we share in Holger’s honor.
Rest in peace.
The Grim Reaper claimed a twofer today, taking the lives of cult horror director George A. Romero and sci-fi legend Martin Landau.
Romero’s obituary can be read here, while Landau’s can be accessed here.
Pierre Henry, legendary pioneer in the field of musique concrète, passed away today. He was 89.
More to come on his passing shortly.
The world of jazz mourned the loss of American pianist Geri Allen, who died on June 12th at the age of 60.
Our good friends at La Montaña Rusa, one of Spain’s best jazz podcasts, offers a program in tribute to Geri here:
Chris Cornell took his life by suicide on the 17th of this month. He was 53 years old, and left a wife and a couple of children. He was also a fellow member of the Eastern (Greek) Orthodox Church. We offer prayers for a good son who fought a good fight in this life. May he finally have rest in his soul.
I can’t ever say I was that big of a fan of Soundgarden, but his solo work, as well as the Audioslave albums, really showcased the best voice of his generation. Rest in Peace.
John Hurt, whose devastating performances in movies like The Elephant Man, Nineteen Eighty-Four, Alien and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone showcased a craftsmanship rare in Hollywood today, died at the age of 77 due to complications caused by pancreatic cancer.
The Daily Mail presents the story here.
Modrý Efekt (Blue Effect) were one of the great Czechoslovakian art rock bands of the 1970s.
We were given the bad news that their leader and guitarist, Radim Hladík, passed away today. Rest in peace.
Terrible news from Daptone Records. After battling pancreatic cancer for some time, Sharon Jones passed away today. She leaves a body of work that reinvigorated soul music, and her presence will be sorely missed. RIP.
A fittingly appropriate song, as the wonderful Leonard Cohen left this mortal coil today. Rest in peace. You left a legacy that will stand the test of time, like Martin Codax or Josquin Des Prez.
