I wish to thank my friend Peter Delchev for introducing me to a brilliant math-rock band out of Bulgaria called Mental Architects. I had no idea these guys were pretty much in front of my face during my recent Balkan visit. I’m definitely looking forward to hearing more, and for those who book festivals, I’d recommend these guys for any slot available.
Post-Rock
[Music] Kauan – Kaiho
[Music] GlerAkur – The Mountains Are Beautiful Now (Luxus)
GlerAkur is the monicker of Icelandic composer Elvar Geir Sævarsson, who also happens to the sound engineer for the National Theater of Iceland (Þjóðleikhúsið). The music sits comfortably between post-rock and ambient music with a cinematic feel to it.
[Music] Release The Long Ships – Niche (first works)
Release The Long Ships is a project from Hungarian multi-instrumentalist Ferenc Kapiller. This is powerful post-rock, post-metal. This is Kapiller’s first album, and he has a pretty healthy catalogue now. Check him out.
[Music] Zwidy – Zwidy
Zwidy are a post-punk/post-rock/alternative music band out of Warsaw, Poland. Sharp playing, surprisingly easy on the ears, and yet they maintain their power. Not bad at all for indie rock.
[Music] Olan Mill – Orient
A dream-touched record, Orient‘s music continues to linger long after the Eastern-flavored tones have faded. An unexpected confusion of static opens the record, but a flowing drone soon straightens everything out, ebbing and flowing with its mystical practices and ancient atmospheres. Orient both trembles and echoes. The dreamy notes are always falling, like a loose scattering of cherry blossom dispersed by April winds. […]
[Music] Die Haut – Doggin’ (Feat. Lydia Lunch)
Die Haut were a German post-punk band who were active during the 1980s and 90s. They collaborated with such luminaries as Nick Cave and Blixa Bargeld, but go full-on swamp blues here with Lydia Lunch.
[Music] Flicker Rate – Reframe EP
Can you imagine this music, dexterously played post-rock with hits at groups as disparate as Helmet and the Durutti Column, was made by a teenager? If this is Spencer Bassett’s first work, then Flicker Rate is going to be someone definitely worth following.
[Music] Gralitsa – Upon A Circle, Upon A Gold
//kroogi.com/player/iframe/3238978?locale=en
After a track on Soundcloud, I decided to purchase this mini-LP from Gralitsa, a musician whose work crosses the genres of world music, post-rock, progressive rock and soundtrack music with great ease. It’s worth picking up.
[Music] Silent Island – Equator EP
István Csarnogurszky leads Silent Island, an outfit from Hungary which combines post-rock, progressive rock, alternative and ambient music into a seamless product. Really mellow listening.
