King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard It’s no secret that metal and stoner rock acts have long been obsessed with the occult. We’re not talking about actual devil worship—or even an infatuation with mystic texts. By “occult,” we mean using the visual and lyrical tropes of magical dudes with spellbinding beards as a way to […]
Progressive Rock
[Music] Collin Walcott – Prancing
Collin Walcott was an American multi-instrumentalist who played with the band Oregon, as well as releasing some incredibly interesting solo material before his death in 1984 from an automobile accident while touring in East Germany.
[Music] The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band – Transparent Day
The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band were an American psychedelic rock band out of Los Angeles, California, who made some of the best music of the era in my opinion.
[Music] OF RINGS AND SWEDES — VINYL CONNECTION
How to approach Bo Hansson’s Lord of the Rings? Having played it so often over many decades, the chances of this reviewer listening dispassionately are about the same as Gollum opening a secondhand jewellery store. It must be said that not everyone likes the Swedish keyboard player’s album. In its early days, MOJO: The Music Magazine […]
[Music] Folque – Fanteguten
Folque were a Norwegian folk-prog band who were active in the early 1970s. According to some comments I’ve read recently, though they didn’t make much of a dent in the American market, they were quite popular in Brazil, of all places.
[Music] Piirpauke – Fyssouni & Imala Maika
Finland’s legendary Piirpauke were among the first bands which could be termed as World Music.
[Music] Yuri Morozov – Human Extinction
This album by Russian synthesist Yuri Morozov was never officially released, probably because the Soviet censors thought it would be too weird for commercial consumption. It’s a shame, as it would have held its own with contemporary German and British heavyweights doing this sort of thing during the late 1970s.
[Music] Tangerine Dream – Phaedra
Phaedra, by Tangerine Dream, is considered a classic for electronic music, Kosmische Musik, Prog Rock, New Age and Krautrock.
[Music] Frank Zappa – Chunga’s Revenge
Some fine free-experimental madness from Frank Zappa. This is the title track off of Chunga’s Revenge.
[Music] LIGHT COORPORATION 64:38 Radio Full Liv(f)e /Fifth Album Coming Soon /RéR Recommended London
LIGHT CORPORATION out of Poland are quickly becoming one of my favorite progressive rock bands. They meld together influences like King Crimson and Univers Zero, while adding a touch of something new. That they are being released on Chris Cutler’s legendary record label, Recommended, says a lot about the quality of their music.
Visit the band’s website here for more information.
