Guy Segers was a member of the Belgian Rock-In-Opposition outfit Univers Zero, as well as their predecessor, Necronomicon. If you check out his CV, you’ll see he’s worked with some of the greatest musicians in all of progressive rock and its offshoots.
Check out his Bandcamp site. He still releases music frequently, and offers title individually, rather than by album.
In honor of Peter Frohmader’s birthday, here’s a depressingly heavy slab of avant-prog by his rather amazing project, Nekropolis.
Kayno Yesno Slonce are a band based out of Sofia, Bulgaria, who straddle genres so easily that they’re nearly impossible to classify. There is a gentle beauty in the music that reminds me of Bert Jansch or The Incredible String Band, but one can hear elements of Wyrd Folk like Shirley Collins or the more instrumental endeavors of Current 93. For those of you who like neofolk, Balkan music, or something slightly hazy and psychedelic, this album is a stunningly good choice for your ears.
Univers Zero provides a gloomy soundtrack to darken your day.
My friends and colleagues from Spain’s finest jazz radio program, La Montaña Rusa, dedicate a program to the work of guitarist Allan Holdsworth, who passed away this week.

With all due thanks to my friend in Kazakhstan, Vyacheslav Popatov, who introduced me to the work of Marimba Plus, a Russian ethno-prog-jazz-fusion band whose work is currently blowing me away. You can hear more from the band at their Bandcamp page.
Can you imagine this music, dexterously played post-rock with hits at groups as disparate as Helmet and the Durutti Column, was made by a teenager? If this is Spencer Bassett’s first work, then Flicker Rate is going to be someone definitely worth following.
The Fradejas family is no stranger to this blog. Both Santiago and A.M. have had releases featured here. This one is yet another feast for the ears.
Santiago’s guitar compositions can be explosive at times, but this more subdued, but intense performance couples beautifully with the trumpeting of James Hill, a brand new name for me to explore. ECM Records, or a label of equal quality, really ought to consider re-releasing an album like this in the future.
