Washington D.C.-based Cuneiform Records has been publishing influential avant-prog rock music for three decades now. Steve Feigenbaum, the label’s owner, should be commended for bringing such groups like Univers Zero, Daniel Denis, Richard Pinhas and Happy Family to American consumers.

Grupa Marina Škrgatića are one of a score of magnificent groups which came out of the former Yugoslavia who produced music of ridiculously high quality. As usual, there’s little information in English about the band, so it’s best to use Chrome or Firefox and see if you can translate this.
Paolo Rustichelli and Carlo Bordini were two musicians from Italy who formed a progressive rock group out of the ashes of a band called Cammello Buck. Truly operatic in a sense, with powerful keyboard work. A treasure of Italian prog!
Peace & Love were a psychedelic rock/garage band out of Mexico. There isn’t much available about the band in English, but for those who can handle Spanish, this website gives a nice synopsis of their career.
Another Soviet ethno-jazz project of high quality. Boomerang hailed from Kazakhstan, and this particular album is considered their rarest.
Through scouring the net over the past 20 years, I’ve come to find that Uzbekistan hides a treasure trove of music. First, prog-rock seems to be relatively popular there (bands like Fromuz and magazines like ProgressoR come to mind).
However, this release was a true gem. Ethno-jazz performed by the band Sato, who have almost nothing in terms of information online.

Another great blow to the world of progressive rock. Guitarist Rodolfo Maltese (link in Italian), a giant in Italian music from the 1970s, died this week. Here he is in an early incarnation of Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, the band whose sound he helped to forge.
Lindisfarne were the ‘gateway-drug’ for me to get into progressive folk. It turns out that guitarist Simon Cowe passed away this week, according to Angel Romero at World Music Central. This track is in his memory.
It’s quite an experience to hear Pink Floyd’s brilliant first album in a mono mix. The remastering job is incredible, even though this video doesn’t do full justice to just how clear the CDs themselves actually sound.
