Ian Nagoski of Canary Records has released yet another gem! This one is a compilation of really great pop singers from female pop singers from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
[Music] Awalom Gebremariam – Desdes
Awalom Gebremariam has quite an interesting story. Originally from Asmara, the capital of the Republic of Eritrea, he left his home country at age 28 to go to the United States, having stayed at an Ethiopian refugee camp while waiting to hit his final destination. This album is the only disc he cut, and it’s quite a lovely example of Eritrean pop.

[Music] Ethel Koffman – Flor Verbena
Editorial Municipal de Rosario is a record label out of Rosario, Argentina, which normally focuses on classical music. After digging into their catalog, I noticed that they’re not limited to that genre alone.
This album features the warm voice of Ethel Koffman, a fellow Argentine whose voice lilts in a way that would fit well with Bossa Nova music.

Here’s a bit of light pop music from Latvia made for a relaxing day. The artists, Edgars Zveja and Valentīna Butāne, both came from conservatory backgrounds in what was then the Latvian S.S.R.

Yankee Doodle Dandy was a 1942 film starring James Cagney. It was a bio-pic based on the life of George M. Cohan, known as “The Man Who Owned Broadway.”
[Music] Various Artists – In The Void Presents: Nick Drake Tribute
In The Void is an organization based in Istanbul, Turkey, which aims to introduce and support local voices and music formations, with different platforms and events. This is one of their first projects; a collection of covers of Nick Drake’s music done by local bands.
The artists are of exceptionally good quality (I will point you particularly to the The Underdogz, who handle Drake’s Black Dog</em> with aplomb.
I hope In The Void continue to promote local talent, and that we’re treated to more compilations of both original music and covers soon.

There isn’t a whole lot of information available on Tito Chicoma, but this impressive EP’s worth of boogaloo is a welcome treat, and we thank Peru’s Repsychled Records for reissuing this!
