It boggles the mind how many amazing punk and post-punk bands came out of the former Yugoslavia. It’s also a crying shame that so few labels have bothered to reissue these gems, dating as far back as the New Wave days.

I have the pleasure to announce yet another amazing compilation of African psychedelica, courtesy of Africa Seven Records out of London, England. The music speaks for itself, but you’ll find a few familiar names here, including Manu Dibango.
Canary Records owner (and a rather fine experimental musician himself) Ian Nagoski should be commended for his work in bringing to life so many wonderful albums from the turn of the 20th Century cut by Balkan and Jewish musicians who left their home countries and made quite good names for themselves in places like New York City. These recordings are lovingly restored, and apparently are leftover tracks transferred from 78rpm discs for a forthcoming 5-volume / 6-LP series to be issued in early 2019. Considering how lovingly Ian treats this material, this upcoming collection sounds like a grand project!
Yet another African music reissue specialist has popped up. This time, it’s Hot Casa Records out of Paris, France. Their latest is a remastered gem from Beninois singer Stanislas Tolon which was recorded in Ghana in 1979.
What a magnificent find! Salah Ragab is the father of Egyptian Jazz. He produces a sound that blends the best elements of the venerable genre, as well as bits of Latin, soundtrack, and even cha-cha-cha in his concoction.
Beyond Beyond is Beyond has begun to carve a place for themselves as the premier prog-psych record label in the United States. Their catalog features acts like Japan’s Kikagaku Moyo, Brooklyn’s Ancient Ocean and many others. This compilation is a great way to introduce yourselves to their racket.
It’s not often that I get to post on a release from Haiti, as I’ve never really had reliable contacts who could guide me to what treasures lie underneath that island which suffers so much. This release from Ostinato Records, a small label out of New York who are doing some incredible reissues from various parts of Africa (think Somalia and Cape Verde for starters), put together this remarkable collection of tracks recorded not only in Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince, but among the expatriate community residing in Brooklyn, New York.
Ian Nagoski of Canary Records has released yet another gem! This one is a compilation of really great pop singers from female pop singers from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
Awesome Tapes From Africa is lucky to have an owner who has a deep passion for the music he puts out. PopMatters.com lets Awesome head honcho Brian Shimkovitz hold court. It’s worth checking out Brian’s blog which started his interest in African music.
The Hum Blog introduces Ored Recordings and their aesthetic to the world. Check out their Bandcamp site – it’s loaded with amazing ethnic music from parts of Russia.
