Mellow, grey-day music from Markus Stockhausen and company.

[Music] Hedningarna – Räven
Hedningarna are a Swedish folk band which also had Finnish members not too terribly long ago. I came across their music while looking at a pile of promos sitting on the desk of a World Music buyer at the shop I had worked at, which were delivered to us by a local Rykodisc distributor. The quality of the sub-label representing the band, Northside Records, was phenomenal. There will surely be more of these folk bands posted here in the future.
[Music] Hotel Pennsylvania Music (Phil Spitalny) – Happy Days Are Here Again
Well, it’s not for everybody. Few, in fact. But, it’s nice to be reminded that there were happy times, and will be again. This slice of Americana was penned and performed by Phil Spitalny and his band.
[Music] Leonard Cohen – Closing Time
A fittingly appropriate song, as the wonderful Leonard Cohen left this mortal coil today. Rest in peace. You left a legacy that will stand the test of time, like Martin Codax or Josquin Des Prez.
[Music] Murkok – My Friend Is Ivan Efremov EP
Something calm, soothing and lovely to relax to after watching people make utter animals out of themselves the last 24 hours. Many thanks to Murkok for this treasure.
[Music] John Zorn – Arab and Jew
It’s been some time since John Zorn was featured here. Here’s some nice music to chill out to this weekend.
[Music] Oslo Kulturnatt: Øyunn – Full Concert
Norway has a very healthy jazz scene, and it seems to be supported by the state (please correct me if I’m wrong). Siv Øyunn Kjenstad, a drummer and vocalist of this trio bearing her name, has no releases (with her as band leader) that I know of, but judging by this performance, I’m looking forward to hearing what they can do in a studio.
[Music] Nicolae Botgros şi Ovidiu Barteş – Hora lui Ion Drăgoi
Moldovan music by Nicolae Botgros and Ovidiu Barteş is perfect for brightening up a rather grey California day.
[Music] The Young Gods ft. Mike Patton – Did You Miss Me (Live @ Montreux 2005)
It’s one thing to hear former Wax Trax! artists The Young Gods play their signature tune live, but having Mike Patton join in on the fun makes the event a bit more merry.
[Music] Pink Floyd – Julia Dream
I’m not much of a fan of later Pink Floyd, but the Syd Barrett-era is very, very hard to beat.
