It’s amazing to think that this label has been around for 20 years, and I missed a good fifteen of those due to ignorance. May they have another happy 20.
Lebanese DJ and crate-digger supreme Ernesto Chahoud has done sterling work collecting some of the most impressive 7-inch sides to come out of Ethiopia. BBE Records has done a great job in remastering and packaging this collection. What I’m looking most forward to is seeing the 3-LP collection. It looks gorgeous.
Analog Africa’s clutches are reaching out farther and wider with this release by Brazilian legend Camarão. It’s a reissue of work he did in around 1960 and is a lively mix of ethnic music, cha-cha, accordion music and something you would hear in a very hazy, psychedelic Spaghetti Western.
Expect this release to ship out starting on February 20, 2018. It’s been well worth the wait!
Finders Keepers have released 100 of the most brilliant reissues imaginable. Spanning from weird African tapes to Jean Rollin horror soundtracks, the lads at FK seem unstoppable at the moment. Here’s to another 100 gems, at least!
I can’t imagine a cooler soundtrack compilation than this one unless Jess Franco’s sountrack works also get reissued.
Jean Rollin was the master of sleazy Euro-horror with a career span of five decades. This comp covers some of the best partners he had in conveying a blood-splattered, gruesome, erotic, cheesy mess onscreen.
Nothing but love for Finders Keepers, who released this gem as a download as well as vinyl.
Japanese band Kikagaku Moyo have become my favorite modern psych band. Though this particular release came out in 2014, it has now been reissued on vinyl. The band carry the tradition of bands like Ghost and and perhaps The Flower Travellin’ Band.

Gunesh (or, more appropriately, The Gunesh Ensemble) was a jazz-prog outfit led by one of the world’s most incredible and entertaining percussionist, the late Rishad Shafi, who died in 2014.
Presch Media GmbH has done a wonderful service in reissuing their 1980 debut, which is less flashy or jazzy, but very mellow, progressive, and showing a glimpse of their future greatness.
The good news is that the band is apparently carrying on, and judging by the mp3s I’m hearing on their website, they will be in good hands for some time to come.
Veteran Deep House producer and dance icon Joe Claussell takes on Cuba’s most popular export at the moment, Daymé Arocena, and makes an amazing track that much meatier and more danceable.
Two gentlemen named Cyril (Cyril Yeterian: Banjo, Guitar, Organ, Vocals and Cyril Bondi: Percussions, Vocals) make a wonderful fusion between Western and Arabic/Maghrebi music.
