Toshiko Akiyoshi is a legendary pianist from Japan (though born in Manchuria). She’s not terribly well-recognized in the US market, though she has been a staple for Down Beat Magazine. In Europe and Asia, however, her fame is secure.
Jazz
[Music] Chico Buarque feat. Telma Costa – Eu Te Amo
Some mellow Bossa Nova to end the night, written by Antônio Carlos “Tom” Jobim and Chico Buarque.
[Music] Uri Caine & Masada String Trio – Jazz in Marciac 2008
A stunning bit of live footage here. Though the stars of the video are John Zorn’s Masada String Trio, pianist Uri Caine utterly dominates the first half of the show with gorgeous improvisation.
The lineup for the night:
Uri Caine – Piano
Mark Feldman – Violin
Erik Friedlander – Cello
Greg Cohen – Double bass
John Zorn – Direction
[Music] Swans – Cry Me A River
So haunting it’s damn near a suicide dirge. Former Swans co-vocalist Jarboe performs one of the most bleak, desolate covers of this classic torch song penned by Arthur Hamilton.
[Music] Ya disponible la Pre-release del primer cd recopilatorio de La Montaña Rusa Radio Jazz!

Wonderful news from our friends in Spain! After all these years of having a wonderful radio program, La Montaña Rusa Radio Jazz has decided to release their first-ever CD. They will be a huge asset to the incredible talent Spain has to offer.
[Music] Urszula Dudziak – Space Lady
Urszula Dudziak is a vocalist and pianist from Poland who did quite a lot of work in the United States during the 1970s.
[Music] Dino Saluzzi – Otoño
The trip of bandoneonist Dino Saluzzi, his son, the saxo-clarinettist Felix Saluzzi, and cellist Anja Lecher, make for a warm trio of avant-tango.
[Music] Rudolph Johnson – The Highest Pleasure
Soulful jazz-funk by Rudolph Johnson, who sounds like someone Kruder & Dorfmeister would have ripped a riff from.
[Music] Enver İzmaylov – Aranjuez
Uzbek-Ukrainian guitarist Enver İzmaylov, known for his amazing tapping technique on the guitar, does justice to a piece penned by Spanish maestro Joaquín Rodrigo.
[Music] Mathias Eick – Cologne Blues
A soft, smooth piece of music after a rough day of sickness. ECM Records has a magic ability to calm the nerves.
The lineup for this piece is as follows:
Mathias Eick – trumpet, guitar, vibraphone
Jon Balke – piano, Fender Rhodes
Audun Erlien – electric bass, guitar
Audun Kleive – drums, percussion
Stian Carstensen – pedal steel guitar
