Brazilian singer Vitor Ramil is a new name to me. His ouevre is amazing on its own, and I’ll be exploring it some time in the future, but what was most impressive was his setting of this poem by Jorge Luis Borges to music which matches the words wonderfully.

[Music] RIP Bobby Hutcherson — Avant Music News
Source: KQED Arts, Bobby Hutcherson passed away at age 75 after a long battle with emphysema. Introduced to the Blue Note fold by veteran alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, Hutcherson quickly joined a loose confederation of creatively ambitious New York musicians inspired by the rhythmic and harmonic innovations of free jazz patriarch Ornette Coleman but dedicated […]
[Music] Ivan Lins – Samba do Avião
Some prime music by Ivan Lins, crooning away to the classic cut originally written by Antônio Carlos “Tom” Jobim.
[Music] Django Reinhardt – Minor Swing
A bit of Manouche music, courtesy of the legendary Django Reinhardt.
[Music] Benjamin Aït-Ali – Ballet and Other Works

This release, by French experimental music composer Benjamin Aït-Ali, is, and probably always will be, the shortest release I’ve had the privilege to review. Ballet and Other Works clocks in at around 3 minutes, but as with the legendary Cinéma Pour L’Oreille series released by Metamkine in the early 1990s, the compositions waste no time in getting to the point.
Aït-Ali is among a new vanguard of composers who will take the flame from the legends of electroacoustic music such as Pierre Henry, Pierre Schaeffer and François Bayle. It sounds like a tall order, but I’d challenge you to study his work. You can listen to Ballet and Other Works here, via OBS Records, based in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, or at Benjamin’s Bandcamp site. More samples of his work can be heard via Soundcloud.
[Music] Catching up with Henry Kaiser — Avant Music News
Source: Peg Head Nation. Still, keeping up with Kaiser could be a full-time job. He’s been on more than 270 albums since 1977 (about seven records per year). And it’s not just a matter of numbers: the sheer variety of sounds and collaborators is staggering. His 2015 releases included Megasonic Chapel, with percussionist William Winant, […]
[Music] Ólafur Arnalds ~ Island Songs — a closer listen
In Iceland, summer is a magical season. The sun never sets, and the shadows are sublime. The temperature is never too hot or too cold. For morning and night people alike, it’s a perfect time to explore the land of fire and ice. This summer, Ólafur Arnalds travelled around his native land, recording one track a […]
[Music] 幾何学模様/Kikagaku Moyo – Kikagaku Moyo
Thanks to a visit with my friend Joe, whose music taste is impeccable for things like drone, old prog and Killing Joke, I figured I’d spend my evening looking for good, psych-y, droney things to listen to. Kikagaku Moyo caught my attention by sounding like a slightly more updated version of Acid Mothers Temple. A good, stony listen.
[Music] FIMAV 32 Review — Avant Music News
Source: Musicworks. A little late, but… The Festival International Musique Actuelle Victoriaville (FIMAV) arrives with the late, brief spring of Quebec’s central region, an energizing jolt between winter and summer that sees the flowering of older vines and new life bursting through the earth. This year’s instalment of FIMAV did what it has done very […]
