Many years ago, well before I had access to the Internet, I used to collect experimental music cassettes. One of the groups I enjoyed most was a Dutch collective called THU20, who featured Jos Smolders, who was also partially responsible for the seminal VITAL WEEKLY series of newsletters which, to this day, feeds my interest for new experimental music. This is Jos’ newest release, from the Portuguese label Crónica Electrónica, and it’s a lovely piece of work. Pay specific attention to track #3, which is dedicated to yours truly, a most humbling honor from a decent and talented man.

[Music] Christian Brendel & Zomb – Odyssée
I have a lot of friends who introduce me to music I would have never discovered on my own, and I’d like to think that I do the same for them in return. I’m indebted to my good friend Slava, who hails from Almaty, Kazakhstan, and is a fine musician himself, for learning about Christian Brendel (link is in French). Apparently, he’s an actor and poet was well as collaborator with the fusion group Zomb.
[Music] Jimmy Scott – Sycamore Trees
Little Jimmy Scott suffered from Kallmann Syndrome, but he turned this into a benefit, developing one of jazz’s most unique voices.
[Music] Pahat Kengät – Sormesi Koskettavat
I’ve had the pleasure of writing about Pahat Kengät before, as they’ve become one of my favorite minimalist projects currently operation today. They return to this blog with two tracks that sit comfortably between Reich’s syncopation and a calming, humming drone. Another gem of a release.

[Music] Joseph Tawadros – The Hour of Separation (2010)
Joseph Tawadros is an Australian oud virtuoso of Coptic heritage. This album comes from 2010, and is an instrumental masterpiece.
[Music] Lukas Ligeti – Pattern Transformation
Though Lukas Ligeti comes from a most impressive pedigree as the son of György, he’s his own man, making contemporary classical music which combines the best of that tradition, spliced with jazz and music from West Africa.
[Music] Jeff Gburek – With Conscious Impurity (Coptic Clusters)
The final post of 2016 is one of the most beautiful to my years. Many thanks to Jeff Gburek for some fine releases, and thanks to the readership for their friendship, their patience and the suggestions for music. Next year, we will add interviews to the website. I won’t post as much simply because the new job will be taking a lot of time, but expect me to point you to some amazing things. More to come soon, but for now, may you and yours enjoy the night in peace, and may you wake up to something better.
[Music] Merzbow – Silent Night
Even noise freaks enjoy Christmas, as Merzbow deftly shows.
[Music] Kashmere Stage Band – Take Five (The Dave Brubeck Quartet Cover)
This is easily the funkiest take on a jazz standard I’ve ever heard. Apparently, the Kashmere Stage Band were famous for making funky sounds which were the equivalent of the JB’s and the Bar-Kays during their peak in the 1960s. Really amazing stuff.
