Contemporary Jazz
[Music] Tony Buck – Unearth
Though we’re not yet allowed to embed the release, it looks like there will be a new release coming in September by The Necks drummer Tony Buck. Our friends at Room 40 Records in Australia will be doing the honors, and you can go directly to their Bandcamp site to pre-order it.
[Music] Ethel Koffman – Flor Verbena
Editorial Municipal de Rosario is a record label out of Rosario, Argentina, which normally focuses on classical music. After digging into their catalog, I noticed that they’re not limited to that genre alone.
This album features the warm voice of Ethel Koffman, a fellow Argentine whose voice lilts in a way that would fit well with Bossa Nova music.
[Music] Ganelin Trio – 1976 Live (Soviet Jazz)
I owe Leo Feigin of the stellar imprint Leo Records perhaps the greatest debt of my musical life. It was he who introduced me, via releases and correspondence, to the works of Sergey Kuryokhin and The Ganelin Trio somewhere near 30 years ago (how time flies…). This is the trio at their peak.
Personnel:
Vyacheslav “Slava” Ganelin – Piano
Vladimir Tarasov – Percussion
Vladimir Chekasin – Saxophone
[Music Podcast] La Montaña Rusa #448. Especial Geri Allen

The world of jazz mourned the loss of American pianist Geri Allen, who died on June 12th at the age of 60.
Our good friends at La Montaña Rusa, one of Spain’s best jazz podcasts, offers a program in tribute to Geri here:
[Music] The Post-Decadent Singers – Post-Decadent Songs
The Post-Decadent Singers are a group led by Mexican guitarist Hector Javier (H.J.) Ayala. Mellow, shimmering, improvisational music. H.J. is a cut above so many other experimental musicians out there.
For more on Hector’s music, consider visiting his Bandcamp site.
[Music] Jack DeJohnette, Larry Grenadier, John Medeski & John Scofield – Hudson
I don’t think it’s possible to surpass the talent in this supergroup quartet, featuring drummer and bandleader Jack DeJohnette, double-bassist Larry Grenadier, keyboardist John Medeski and his sometimes-collaborator, guitarist John Scofield.
[Music] Guy Segers – Apex
Guy Segers was a member of the Belgian Rock-In-Opposition outfit Univers Zero, as well as their predecessor, Necronomicon. If you check out his CV, you’ll see he’s worked with some of the greatest musicians in all of progressive rock and its offshoots.
Check out his Bandcamp site. He still releases music frequently, and offers title individually, rather than by album.
[Music] Polish Jazz: Era-Defining Records From Behind The Iron Curtain
Cezary Lerski lived in Los Angeles last I remember, and his label should be sainted for providing so many re-releases of classic Polish Jazz. This new series is being handled by Languidity Records, and they also do amazing work.
Liza Premiyak of The Calvert Journal has more here.
[Music] Noël Akchoté – All I Have To Say
If this is all Noël Akchoté has to say, I’d say it’s quite a lot. Not since Derek Bailey has anyone, at least to my ears, make skeletal sketches sound to full. This is a solo album of standards sparsely arranged and performed on electric guitar. The most touching piece, Are You Lonesome Tonight, shows the beauty of the instrumentation, even if we’re lacking the voice of Elvis to fill this out.
Expect a few more reviews of Noël’s work here. He’s always busy crafting some new work of art, and collaborating with some fine new talent.
