We don’t have a lot of Circassian music coming around these days, but this cut by Zaid Hajarat is a winner.
Folk
[Music] Ertuğrul Erkişi – Saba Taksim
Ertuğrul Erkişi is a composer of Turkish Sufi music. I’m quite new to his work, but this is pleasant.
숨 [su:m] – Passing Rain
Another killer from Max Franosch.
숨 [suːm] are another incredible band from South Korea. I can’t seem to find much information on the duo (except that they are Jiha Park and Yanggeum), but they perform on what look to be traditional instruments, and the sound is both hypnotic and powerful.
[Music/Religion] Chamanisme en Sibérie : Les esprits écoutent avec Henri Lecomte
A wonderful program in French on Siberian shamanism. Listen to the music. There is a thread one would find familiar in a lot of Native American music.
[Music] Isihia [Исихия] – Lord I Called Thee [Господи Возвах]
[Music/Podcast] Sneum’s Palads / Lake Radio
Two radio programs to share from Jan Sneum, a wonderful radio host and commentator I met at the Without Borders Festival in Balchik, Bulgaria.

[Music] Louvat Bros. – Manastir
One of the reasons I enjoy going every two years to the WithoutBorders Festival, held at Balchik Castle near Varna, Bulgaria, is first, for the camaraderie between those of us who want to promote good music. The second reason is that the talent on display is magnificent.
The Louvat Bros. are from Belgium, but you’d never know it if you didn’t hear them speak. They have a passion for Americana which dwarfs the modern bluegrass scene in the United States. They’re also not afraid to take risks, mixing influences from Bulgaria, Hungary and the Celtic world.
A review of their recent release on Acoustic Music Records from Germany is forthcoming.
All thanks to Patrick De Loecker for introducing me to their music.
[Music] The Bulgarian Voices Angelite – Gospodi Pomiloi
The Bulgarian Voices Angelite are the continuation of the Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir, made famous in the west as Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, who became popular through a release on 4AD Records and a collaboration with British singer Kate Bush. Here they are singing one of the most beautiful hymns in the Eastern Orthodox canon.
[Music] Lindisfarne – Fog on the Tyne
Lindisfarne were the ‘gateway-drug’ for me to get into progressive folk. It turns out that guitarist Simon Cowe passed away this week, according to Angel Romero at World Music Central. This track is in his memory.
[Music] Faran Ensemble – Dune
The Faran Ensemble are a rather spectacular World Music group out of Israel, taking elements of the music of their neighbors. They are a band to watch out for in the coming years.
