[Music] Richter Scale – A Ripple on the Richter Scale

March 22, 2018 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

In 2008, Legendary Pink Dots members Edward Ka-Spel and The Silverman trekked over to Chile where they made a collaboration of Michel Leroy of Un Festín Sagital, Chile’s finest experimental neofolk group.

This hazy, drony, Krauty improvisation is the fruit of their meeting.  Stunningly hypnotic work.

[Music] Leonardo Pavkovic: Nothing Is Ordinary

All About Jazz does a splendid job interviewing Leonardo Pavkovic, whose imprint MoonJune Records has released some of the most vital discs of the past five years in the field of jazz and avant-progressive rock.

[Music] El Arca de Valjós – La Pálida Alma Humana

March 16, 2018 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

I love Mexican progressive rock, especially when it’s avant-progressive. Many great bands came down the beltway from Mexico, especially from the capital. El Arca de Valjós seems to be keeping the avant-prog tradition alive, and it’s wonderful to hear.

[Music] Five-Storey Ensemble – Not That City

March 3, 2018 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

Not a lot of bands are coming out of Belarus at the moment, but Five-Storey Ensemble are about the best working out of Minsk today. They are the standard bearers for the modern Rock-In-Opposition movement.

[Music] Wirephobia – Kurdistan

February 21, 2018February 21, 2018 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

Kudos to Wirephobia, an experimental/noise project based out of Erbil, Kurdistan in Iraq, for doing their part in developing a local noise music scene in what one could imagine is a hostile area.

The music on Kurdistan, released in 2016, is a pastiche of ethnic recordings and bolts of feedback, radio emissions and it all seems to work quite well.

[Music] Blake DeGraw – Electronic Duodecets for Humans

February 14, 2018 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

Blake DeGraw is a very interesting multi-instrumentalist and experimental music composer and improviser out of Seattle, Washington.  On this album, he is deconstructing a violin, making some terribly pleasant noise along the way.

[Music] Rafiq Bhatia – Breaking English

February 13, 2018 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

New York-based guitarist Rafiq Bhatia has an upcoming release on April 6, 2018, of what looks to be an improv masterpiece. I’m looking forward to hearing more tracks upon its entry into the marketplace.

[Music] Mediterranean Deconstruction Ensemble – Day De Senar

February 8, 2018 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

This is a magnificent find for me. The Mediterranean Deconstruction Ensemble is a solid improvisational/experimental troupe out of Moscow led by pianist Gregory Sandomirsky.

The music is a great combination of freaky jazz, Mediterranean rhythms, and Sephardic/Ladino time shifts. A very nice effort.

[Music] Sote – Holy Error [Opal Tapes]

January 29, 2018 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

Sote are a very impressive experimental music band out of Germany, headed by Ata Ebtekar and supplemented with fellow musicians from Iran taking a far more interesting view of the genre than most.

They do have a Bandcamp site for this particular release if interested, here.

[Music] NDIO – Airback

January 27, 2018 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

Saxophonist Frank van der Kooij was a member of the Hugh Hopper Band for many years. When that project finally closed up shop, Frank asked Hugh to participate in a new project, NDIO. This is one of the fruits from that collaboration.
