Amazing things keep showing up in Mexico. Sonido Gallo Negro are a band out of Mexico City, and mix a wild cumbia sound with psychedelic music. The results are thoroghly in keeping with the best of radical Mexican alternative music.

[Music] El Mahdy Jr. – Raï Dubs
El Mahdy Jr. is a composer and beatmaker originally from Alergia, but who is now hailing from Turkey. His work is informed by VERY heavy dub (his dad, apparently, had quite an awesome collection) and sampling. Very creative.
[Music] Fairuz – Good Friday: Eastern Sacred Songs (1967)
Perfect Good Friday listening from Fairuz.
[Music] Saleh Al Day – يا جميل يا حلو (Sudan, 1970)
Much love to Habibi Funk who shared this video via their Instagram page. Unfortunately, I can’t find anything on Saleh Al Day, but what I’m hearing here is wonderful!
[Music] Sean Khan, Hermeto Pascoal – Palmares Fantasy featuring Hermeto Pascoal
Many thanks to Andrew Jervis over at Bandcamp Weekly for not only sharing Sean Khan’s work but for a stellar interview with a young man who will be seen as one of the UK’s leading lights of new jazz.
[Music] Psarantonis (Ψαραντώνης) – Η στράτα που βαδίζω (The Street I Walk)
Some magic, courtesy of Greece’s finest Byzantine lyra player, Psarantonis.
[Music] Various Artists – Music From Yemen Arabia
Sub Rosa Records issues a magnificent collection of recordings done in Sanaa and Aden, Yemen’s first and second cities. The album was recorded in 1973 by Ragnar Johnson and Jessica Mayer, who did a stellar job making the original recordings sound so warm.
[Music] Saudi Arabia’s Bootleg Music Shops

Arwa Haider writes an article for the BBC on how bootleg music is spread throughout one of the most anti-pop-music cultures on the face of the Earth.
[Music] “The Deer’s Cry”, or St. Patrick’s Breastplate, sung by Angelina
A happy St. Patrick’s Day for you Catholic and Orthodox who celebrate his feast. The day has a special meaning for me personally as, last year on this date, we moved into our new home. I was the first to enter the home, and the first benediction, as worthless as it was as I’m no priest, was to utter St. Patrick’s Breastplate before moving items into the house.
[Music] Joyce Moreno – Visions Of Dawn
I can’t think of a Brazilian singer I adore more than Joyce Moreno, and that’s saying quite a bit considering the legendary talent that has come out of the country.
Still, she is in top form in this album working with percussionist Naná Vasconcelos and Mauricio Maestro on vocals.
Though recorded in 1976, this release, as great as it is, didn’t see a proper release until 2009.
