[Video] Carmen Souza & Theo Pas’cal – Cape Verdean Blues (live @Bimhuis Amsterdam)
From the island which gave the world Cesaria Evora comes another wonderful, husky voice in Carmen Souza, accompanied by bassist, composer and producer Theo Pas’cal, who is a hell of an arranger.
[Sample] Phạm Mộng Hải – For the Fallen
Phạm Mộng Hải is yet another new name to me. Vietnam seems rich in musical talent, but there simply isn’t enough information on artists from the country available in a language I can decipher.
Still, many thanks to Glitterbeat Records for enlightening the world with this release.
[Video] Vasco Bulgarelli – Amapola (Canzone Spagnola)
I’m surprised that there is so little information about Vasco Bulgarelli online, but it seems ‘Amapola’ is a Neapolitan classic. It seems the Spanish left a lot of good in that city (how much we got back in return is debatable, but I loved the city nonetheless).
[Video] Eli Fara – Kolazh Serenatash
Eli Fara is a rather beautiful singer from Korçë, Albania. She does a sort-of pop-folk-chanteuse bit, and does it stunningly well.
[Video] Egberto Gismonti – Selva Amazônica (to Villa-Lobos)
Egberto Gismonti was my introduction to ECM Records, believe it or not. Never has his work disappointed me. It is particularly wonderful to see that he dedicates this piece to Brazilian countryman and composer Heitor Villa-Lobos.
[Video] Ghazal – You Are My Moon
Ghazal are an Iranian-Indian supergroup of sorts comprised of Kayhan Kalhor from Kurdish Iran on kamencheh, sitarist Shujaat Khan and tabla player Swapan Chaudhuri, who both hail from India.
[Video] Firyuza – Firyuza (1979)
Firyuza were a prog-jazz-funk band from Turkmenistan. The album is a classic in the Soviet Rock world.
[Video] Milton Banana – O Ritmo e o Som da Bossa Nova (1963)
Bossa Nova was smoking hot during the early 60s. Artists like Milton Banana broke hard into the American market, and after hearing this album you’ll dig why.
[Video] Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou – Piano Solo (Full Album)
From Éthiopiques 21: Ethiopia Song, this is Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, one truly bluesy nun of the the Ethiopian Orthodox persuasion.
