Another treasure from Reddit, it turns out that Libaaxyada Maaweeliska Banaadir (Banaadir Entertainment Lions) was a theater group from Mogadishu who mixed talented veterans with burgeoning new talent from the late 1970s to the early 1980s, before everything went to Hell.

There are so many incredible Brazilian artists, but for some reason Jorge Ben (Jor) is among my favorites. It’s his voice and the gentle samba rhythm that sets him a notch above many others.
Wonderfully heavy Greek music by Cretan singer Antonis Xylouris, who records under the name of Psarantonis.
Breton harpist Alan Stivell interprets a 19th Century folk song from the South of Brittany and makes it his own.
I tend to find ‘pagan’ metal to be as corny as it is heathen. Still, some of these bands have amazing talent, and manage to blend old and new rather well. Obscurus Orbis, a band from Jūrmala, Latvia, fit the bill very well.
Andrew Jervis broadcasts for Bandcamp.com as their chief curator and host of the Friday Night Session radio show (KUSF). I only wish Bandcamp would host more shows, but if this is it, it’s a damn good one.

I don’t think there’s a corner of the earth (except in either Taliban-land or ISIS-istan) where David Bowie’s music didn’t reach out to. Here is Brazilian pop-samba artist Seu Jorge doing a sparse, beautiful cover of a classic Bowie tune.
Norwegian singer Sinikka Langeland is more proof, as if you need it, that ECM can do little wrong. Kantele music in a jazz idiom. Stunning.
Imagine if DAF discovered cumbias in the 1980s with lo-fi equipment, but made up for it with a high, hazy, nearly psychedelic level of energy? Friends, I give you Fred Lorca, a composer originally from Argentina who had been residing in Spain for some years, and is, perhaps, once again residing in the Southern Cone.
This album isn’t imbued with kitschiness like, say, Señor Coconut. Think Yello, as this has a driving, danceable rhythm while maintaining its focus. That doesn’t mean it’s all serious, as there are small, cheeky interludes, and a feeling of a gang-land soundtrack in these rhythms.
