Another treasure from Reddit, it turns out that Libaaxyada Maaweeliska Banaadir (Banaadir Entertainment Lions) was a theater group from Mogadishu who mixed talented veterans with burgeoning new talent from the late 1970s to the early 1980s, before everything went to Hell.

I feel like I struck solid gold today! Thanks to the brilliant lads over at Shellac Head, a fine reissue label one should explore deeply, I’m able to dig into a pile of fine Sudanese music. Only the most committed bin divers know about these tracks. At $5, it’s a steal!
A lot of press covering Nigerian music rightfully goes to Fela Kuti, yet he’s not the only innovative figure to gain international fame. His percussionist, Tony Allen, has spent a good part of five decades making music which was influenced by funk and jazz as well as Highlife. The Afrobeat sound he was instrumental in creating continues to inspire musicians like Brian Eno and Blur’s Damon Albarn.
Many thanks to Hot Casa Records, who introduced the music of Roger Damawuzan, the ‘James Brown of Lomé‘, to the world. You can definitely see where he gets his inspiration from!
Some funky Ethiopian soul, courtesy of Mahmoud Ahmed, one of the best voices of the old guard.
He may have been a shill for Muammar Gaddafi, but Mohamed Hassan was and is one of the best representatives of Libyan music.
