Jerome Froese, son of Edgar and a fine musician in his own right, bring terrible news that his father, the linchpin of Tangerine Dream, has passed away. We post my favorite album by the band, Phaedra, in his memory.
Electronica
[Sample] Raymond M – Unidentified Threads EP
Something rhythmic, reminding me of old post-Industrial cassette culture, touched with This Heat, courtesy of Raymond M.
[Sample] Sōzu – Terra Australis Reliquendum [Terra Australis]
Sōzu is a project from Italy run by Paolo Mascolini. He’s become a favorite on my Soundcloud feed. This particular piece, about 15 minutes in length, goes into cosmic territory, mixing a Floyd-ish dreamscape with early ambient and Krautrock/Kosmische Musik flourishes.
[Video] Lola V. Stain – Makova Polja
Lola V. Stain were one of the founding members of Macedonian ethnocore. The project, featuring Zlatko Origjanski, gave a platform to musicians like Goran Trajkoski, who would found Anastasia, as well as the legendary gaija player Pece Atanasovski.
[Podcast] ‘Haunted’ by Christina Liveri
Haunted by Christina Liveri on Mixcloud
One of my favorite podcasters out of Greece, Christina touches on tracks by U.N.K.L.E., Dead Can Dance, and many others. A worthy follow (would you expect any less?).
[Video] UNKLE (with Ian Astbury) – Burn My Shadow
How on Earth did I miss out on this one? Ian Astbury must have been on haitus from The Cult while making this track for the electronic music group U.N.K.L.E. His voice is in very good form here, and U.N.K.L.E. provide a perfect backdrop for it.
[Video] Foltin and Nikola Kodjabashia – To Whom Do You Belong Now?
Foltin are one of the most innovative groups in the Republic of Macedonia. I’ve always wondered why those into Rock-In-Opposition music didn’t gravitate to their quirky music much sooner. Nikola Kodjabashia is a Macedonian pianist currently based in the United Kingdom who works primarily composing avant-garde music. How this pairing could produce such sumptuous, smoky trip-hop not out-of-place in any New York jazz bar is beyond me. Well worth seeking out!
[Video] Cremadelic – Cherry
Julio Gutiérrez (Cremadelic in this guise) has few side projects which will eventually be featured on these pages. This one is something akin to shoegaze music touching base with IDM.
[Video] Aleksandar Pejovski – Black Raindrops Upon The Flower Blossoms [live]
The final post of the year, and it’s a sublime cut. Aleksandar Pejovski is a pianist from Skopje, Macedonia who records for local label PMG Recordings. I thank my friend Biljana Vasileva for this treasure. A good way to wind down the year.
Have a Happy 2015!
[Video] Jóhann Jóhannsson – How We Left Fordlandia
Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson sends us off to dreamland with a cut from the album Fordlandia.
