I NEVER get mail from local bands or record labels. It’s been a constant since I started writing to musicians. Part of it was because I could see them at my leisure, but part of it was because it wasn’t ‘cool’ to talk to local indie rags, only to people from the outside. Well, today, I can say that I can finally promote a local person. Breatherrr is a trip-hop act with retro influences which bring up genres like electro and new wave. I’ll have to investigate further.

[Music] Klara Lewis – Too
Dark, scratchy, and feverishly creepy. This is the hallucinatory soundscape of Klara Lewis, an amazing artist recording for Editions Mego, one of Austria’s coolest weirdo-electronica labels.
[Music] vivienxo – w84u
vivienxo is a Finnish musician who does ‘dreampop’. I have no idea what the genre really is, but there’s a lovely, muffled sound to it that reminds me of old 80s dreampop that I’m familiar with, such as bands like Dream Academy. Definitely worth investigating further.
[Music] Sofa Surfers – Long Bone
My Facebook friend, Rididillo Theitalian, has long been a source of wonderful music for me. She goes down memory lane to dig up The Sofa Surfers, an Austrian project mixing trip hop, dub and acid jazz together flawlessly.
[Music] DJ Shadow feat. Run The Jewels – Nobody Speak
This would make the debates more interesting. Despite the cheap shot to one of the candidates (which is no surprise – I don’t expect a clean fight from anyone, but I also don’t expect sissified whining and bitching when it happens to their candidate), DJ Shadow makes a perfect video for the electoral season.

Ad Astra is a project of Zane O’Brien, one of the most creative minds working in electronic music today. This release is one of the better experimental electronic releases I’ve heard in quite some time.
[Music] Benjamin Aït-Ali – Ballet and Other Works
This release, by French experimental music composer Benjamin Aït-Ali, is, and probably always will be, the shortest release I’ve had the privilege to review. Ballet and Other Works clocks in at around 3 minutes, but as with the legendary Cinéma Pour L’Oreille series released by Metamkine in the early 1990s, the compositions waste no time in getting to the point.
Aït-Ali is among a new vanguard of composers who will take the flame from the legends of electroacoustic music such as Pierre Henry, Pierre Schaeffer and François Bayle. It sounds like a tall order, but I’d challenge you to study his work. You can listen to Ballet and Other Works here, via OBS Records, based in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, or at Benjamin’s Bandcamp site. Hope all is going well with you. You may have already heard about it on Facebook or Twitter, but last month my parents’ basement flooded destroying about a fourth of the physical inventory, but if you even mildly follow the music industry you know that physical sales have been in dramatic decline for ten years so I am trying to play it positive as making me clear out some trash rather than $10,000 worth of CDs. My main regret of the experience is it really highlights that I should have done lower press runs the first 15 years & then I could’ve helped more bands. Live, learn, & move on, right?
