Fairouz is the nightingale of the Arab pop world. Here’s an album’s worth of hits for you to hear.
Classical Music
[Music] Philip Glass – The Kiss
A simple, rhythmic, filmic, beautiful melody. A great one by Philip Glass.
[Music] Leo Brouwer – “Recuerdos de Lieja” : Piazzolla, La Muerte del Angel (Live in Lukowski Festival)
Leo Brouwer comes from a distinguished pedigree, being the grandnephew of Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona. His grotesque support of Communism aside, he is among the finest classical music guitarists of his generation, and his handling of Astor Piazzolla, in particular, is extremely impressive.
[Music] Bernard Parmegiani – Espèces d’espaces
One of Bernard Parmegiani’s 21st Century compositions. Still very much avant-garde.
[Sample] Bjørnar Habbestad – Solo live at Landmark, June 2015
It pays to scroll through various social media from time to time. Today’s Soundcloud scroll brought me to the music of Bjørnar Habbestad, a Norwegian composer of avant-garde and improvisational music. I don’t know if this particular piece is part of a CD or just a live improv, but this made for some incredibly good listening this afternoon.
[Video] Ólafur Arnalds -Epilogue
Ólafur Arnalds produces the sort of gorgeous music Iceland seems to be noted for. He comes from an electronic/techno background, but his understanding of composition shows in his delicate compositions.
[Video] Ivana Stefanović – The Epistle of Birds (1976)
Less a piece of music and more a gaggle of birds having their caterwauling manipulated expertly by Ivana Stefanović, who composed this piece of sound art inside the studios of Radio Belgrade.
[Podcast] Ultima Thule #1068 – Bruno Sanfilippo

Many thanks to Miguel Santos, who will be showcasing Bruno in London later this year.
[Video] Mal Waldron Plays Erik Satie – Desespoir Agreable
Erik Satie is beautifully interpreted here by Mal Waldron’s trio, which includes him on piano, joined by Reggie Workman on bass and Ed Blackwell playing drums.
[Video] Valentyn Silvestrov – Intermezzo
Pianist Peter Bannister interprets the work of Ukrainian composer Valentyn Silvestrov.
