In Spe were one of the great progressive rock bands to come out of the former Soviet Republic of Estonia. This work features the talents of Erkki-Sven Tüür, who would eventually become a contemporary classical composer of note.
Contemporary Classical
[Music] Sinikka Langeland – The Rose
Norwegian singer Sinikka Langeland is more proof, as if you need it, that ECM can do little wrong. Kantele music in a jazz idiom. Stunning.

[Music] Jón Leifs – Requiem, Op. 33b
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncRi2iXZJEk
Iceland’s greatest contribution to classical music. Jón Leifs needs far more promotion in the world of classical music, as do so many talents resting over there. They do pop and rock very well, but their contemporary classical scene is rather amazing.
[Music] Morton Feldman – Three Voices I-II
The proper title of this piece by Morton Feldman is Three Voices, for soprano & tape, or 3 sopranos (1982). It’s not one of his most famous pieces, but certainly is a favorite of mine.
[Music] Ólafur Arnalds feat. Arnór Dan – For Now I Am Winter
Arnór Dan, singer of Agent Fresco, is a new name for me, but Ólafur Arnalds has a long and sumptuous track record of producing gorgeous music.
[Music] Alexei Aigui – Octo
Ensemble 4’33” leader and violinist Alexei Aigui collaborates with the Ad Libitum Orchestra on a new piece, performed at the Moscow Conservatory earlier this year.
[Music] Hans Otte – Das Buch der Klange (The Book of Sounds) / III – IV – V
Beautiful minimalism courtesy of Hans Otte, a new name for me from the ECM Records label.
[Music] György Kurtág – Songs to Poems by Anna Akhmatova, Op. 41 – #1-4

What a pleasant surprise! I never knew that Anna Akhmatova’s work had been used as material for composition until running across some posts by György Kurtág and John Tavener (who will be featured in a future post).
[Music] Daniel Denis – Coeur De Boeuf
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HElt0MUGQs
Daniel Denis of Univers Zero and Art Zoyd has quite an impressive resume as a solo artist. Here is a composition of his which translates into “Beef Heart” (one can guess who he is offering tribute to).
