Many years ago, well before I had access to the Internet, I used to collect experimental music cassettes. One of the groups I enjoyed most was a Dutch collective called THU20, who featured Jos Smolders, who was also partially responsible for the seminal VITAL WEEKLY series of newsletters which, to this day, feeds my interest for new experimental music. This is Jos’ newest release, from the Portuguese label Crónica Electrónica, and it’s a lovely piece of work. Pay specific attention to track #3, which is dedicated to yours truly, a most humbling honor from a decent and talented man.

[Music] Pahat Kengät – Sormesi Koskettavat
I’ve had the pleasure of writing about Pahat Kengät before, as they’ve become one of my favorite minimalist projects currently operation today. They return to this blog with two tracks that sit comfortably between Reich’s syncopation and a calming, humming drone. Another gem of a release.
[Music] TeHÔM – Despiritualization Of Nature (part I – IV)
One doesn’t normally mix Death In June and Croatian Catholicism and mysticism. As it turned out, Siniša Očuršćak, who studied Philosophy of Religion during the same time I was doing so, ended up attracting the attention of Douglas P. and releasing one of the unsung dark ambient albums of the 1990s. I understand that the project has been resurrected by another band member, and I look forward to exploring their current work.
[Music] Jeff Gburek – With Conscious Impurity (Coptic Clusters)
The final post of 2016 is one of the most beautiful to my years. Many thanks to Jeff Gburek for some fine releases, and thanks to the readership for their friendship, their patience and the suggestions for music. Next year, we will add interviews to the website. I won’t post as much simply because the new job will be taking a lot of time, but expect me to point you to some amazing things. Wim Mertens is a minimalist composer out of Belgium whose work I’ve followed since at least 1990. He’s still releasing lovely music, but this particular piece is my favorite, from the album bearing the same title.

After a track on Soundcloud, I decided to purchase this mini-LP from Gralitsa, a musician whose work crosses the genres of world music, post-rock, progressive rock and soundtrack music with great ease. It’s worth picking up.
[Music] Un Festin Sagital – La Procesion de la Noche Solar
Un Festin Sagital were one of the finest ritualistic ambient bands to ever come out of Chile. In fact, I can’t think of another, save the related band Thanatoloop.
[Music] The Durutti Column – Snowflakes
Not quite “Jingle Bells,” but it’s still some lovely post-punk/new wave music which fits the season nicely, courtesy of Vini Reilly and the Durutti Column.
[Music] Silent Island – Equator EP
István Csarnogurszky leads Silent Island, an outfit from Hungary which combines post-rock, progressive rock, alternative and ambient music into a seamless product. Really mellow listening.

Magnetic Ghost
So first up is Magnetic Ghost’s debut Loss Molecules. It’s a bit of a post punk & post rock hybrid. The thing it reminds me most of is Windsor for the Derby’s Difference & Repetition, which is an album that gave me a lot of ideas about music. Anyway, you should check it out. I agreed to put it out after hearing the first three minutes.
