[Music] Polish Jazz: Era-Defining Records From Behind The Iron Curtain

April 7, 2017 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

record09

Cezary Lerski lived in Los Angeles last I remember, and his label should be sainted for providing so many re-releases of classic Polish Jazz.  This new series is being handled by Languidity Records, and they also do amazing work.

Liza Premiyak of The Calvert Journal has more here.

[Music] John Cale Announces 50th Anniversary Celebration of The Velvet Underground & Nico

February 25, 2017 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

TVU-thumb

It’s amazing to think that this album, which sold pitifully when it was first released, influenced almost everyone who bought it to form a band, so the legend goes. I’m very happy to hear John Cale himself had a hand in preparing this seminal release by The Velvet Underground & Nico. I simply hope the remastering is good.

[Music] Cannonball Adderley – 74 Miles Away

February 12, 2017 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

Julian “Cannonball” Adderley was under the influence of North African music during this time period, and one of the musicians featured in this recording, Joe Zawinul, would go on to play with both Miles Davis and Weather Report, a band he formed in the 1970s.

[Music] Svend Asmussen – Dark Eyes String Swing

February 8, 2017 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

“The fiddling Viking,” Svend Asmussen, passed away yesterday at age 100. He’s shown here playing the Russian standard, “Dark Eyes.”

[Music] Jimmy Scott – Sycamore Trees

January 7, 2017 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

Little Jimmy Scott suffered from Kallmann Syndrome, but he turned this into a benefit, developing one of jazz’s most unique voices.

[Music] Perry Como – God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

December 23, 2016 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

As Advent draws to a close, we prepare the house for Christmas celebrations with Perry Como booming in the background. May you and yours who celebrate on the Gregorian Calendar Sunday have a quiet peaceful one.

[Music] Assa’d Khoury – Al Ghaba (1978)

December 22, 2016 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

All credit goes to my friend Thomas for hipping me to Assa’d Khoury, the king of Syrian electronic belly dance groove music.

[Music] The Ronettes – Sleigh Ride

December 20, 2016 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

Before Phil Spector lost his mind and murdered Lana Clarkson, he was terrorizing his stable of artists, include that of the group of his former wife, Ronnie, The Ronettes. Still, this is a happy Christmas ditty.
