Johann Sebastian Bach was the master of his field in music, as Andrei Tarkovsky was a master in his chosen medium of film. Sit back and enjoy “St. Matthew Passion,” which is perfect for the nearing of the end of Holy Week.

[Music/Film] Two LPs from erotic horror flick Vampyros Lesbos reissued by Wah Wah

Oh, happy day! Though I always enjoyed the Crippled Dick reissue of said soundtrack, it seems too truncated. Wah Wah Records has rectified the problem. The soundtrack to Vampyros Lesbos can now be heard in fuller glory, with beautiful repackaging.

[Music] Edward Artemiev – Solaris Theme – Full Bach
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_vi67SHU4E
For my ears, Edward Artemiev’s Solaris soundtrack is absolutely perfect listening, especially this interpretation on the work of Johann Sebastian Bach (the chorale prelude to Ich ruf’ zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ (BWV 639)) using an ANS synthesizer.

[Film] Viy (Directed by Alexander Ptushko, Konstantin Yershov, George Kropachev)
To my knowledge, Viy (Вий) is the only horror movie ever made in the Soviet Union. If someone could correct me on that, I’d be much obliged.
The film was adapted from the work of the same name by one of my favorite writers, Nikolai Gogol.

[Film] A Christmas Carol (1984)

Featuring the talents of actor George C. Scott, this is by far my favorite secular Christmas film.
[Film] ‘Kwaidan’ and ‘House of Bamboo’: Visions of, and From, the Rising Sun

The New York Times’ J. Hoberman reviews Masaki Kobayashi’s classic interpretation of Kwaidan. The collection comes from Irish-Greek author Lafcadio Hearn’s anthology of the same name.
