숨 [su:m] – Passing Rain

November 2, 2015 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

Another killer from Max Franosch.

숨 [suːm] are another incredible band from South Korea. I can’t seem to find much information on the duo (except that they are Jiha Park and Yanggeum), but they perform on what look to be traditional instruments, and the sound is both hypnotic and powerful.

[Music] Lucid Fall – Warm Sunshine [루시드 폴 – 햇살은 따뜻해]

November 2, 2015 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

This one comes from South Korea, courtesy of my good friend, Max Franosch, who has a taste for music I respect deeply.

Lucid Fall have a sound that remind some chilled-out neo-soul band married to a Dylanesque bossa nova sound. This guy is worth keeping an eye on!

[Music] Stream the Complete Works of Bach & Beethoven: 250 Free Hours of Music

November 2, 2015 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

If, for some reason, you can’t bother with listening to any of the thousands of other incredible classical composers and their works, you can drown yourself in the same old standards by Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven. Thank Open Culture for this one.

[Music] Happy The Man – Crafty Hands

November 1, 2015 / Rudy Carrera / 1 Comment

Peak-era symphonic prog by Happy The Man, a Virginia/Washington DC-based group who once featured keyboardist Kit Watkins, who shines in this album.

[Music] Christopher Lee – Ghost Riders in the Sky

October 31, 2015 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

Absolutely apropos for Halloween.

Before there was “The Most Interesting Man in the World,” or me, for that matter, there was Christopher Lee. He could do everything well – even cowboy songs for Halloween.

[Music/Religion] Chamanisme en Sibérie : Les esprits écoutent avec Henri Lecomte

October 30, 2015 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

A wonderful program in French on Siberian shamanism. Listen to the music. There is a thread one would find familiar in a lot of Native American music.

[Literature] Jorge Luis Borges – The Library of Babel [Sci-Fi | Let’s Read!]

October 30, 2015 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

It’s good to hear people take a crack at reading works by Jorge Luis Borges. This one is my favorite.

[Music] Pierre Henry: Fragments pour Artaud (1970)

October 29, 2015 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

Pierre Henry was the composer who introduced me to the world of musique concrète. The fact that he and his contemporary and partner, Pierre Schaeffer, were able to do some of their early works without the use of magnetic tape, still astounds me.

[Music] Camel – I Can See Your House From Here

October 28, 2015 / Rudy Carrera / 1 Comment

Camel were one of the greatest progressive rock bands of the 1970s, easily ranking with bands like Yes and Genesis. It’s high time they got their fair due.

[Archaeology] Grave of ‘Griffin Warrior’ at Pylos Could Be a Gateway to Civilizations

October 27, 2015 / Rudy Carrera / Leave a comment

It looks like there was a magnificent archaeological find near the area of Pylos, Greece. The New York Times has more here.
