The king of the Cool Jazz sound out of the West Coast of the United States, this fine trumpet player could not read sheet music, but a stint in the Army was where he first honed his craft. He had movie-star good looks, charisma, excelling technique in blowing his horn, and a voice that sounded innocent and lost (many a lady squealed hearing him sing “My Funny Valentine,” a classic song he made his own, in some way. Unfortunately, heroin, that demon that does away with too many talented musicians, turned out to be his undoing, as he ended up falling out of a window in Amsterdam. A disgraceful way for such a prodigious talent to die, but he lives on the in the LP and CD collection of millions today.
